Featuring...
Saltspring Island’s Harry Manx offers a unique international
perspective. What makes Harry so fascinating is his ability to fuse Indian melodies with
the blues, creating a whole new sound. Harry is one of the few musicians outside of India
to play the Mohan Veena, 20-string Indian slide guitar.
He also sings and plays lap
slide guitar, harmonica, and banjo. Toronto’s Kevin Breit is one of North America’s
finest musicians who has recorded with a virtual who’s who of music. He currently plays
and tours with Cassandra Wilson and Norah Jones. He has mastered over 30 stringed
instruments, and can play virtually any musical style.
Harry and Kevin play an
incredible range of material, from blues to country to jazz to Indian ragas!
"Individually Kevin Breit and Harry Manx are two of the most compelling and
original musical artists in the country. Together they’ve thrown down a roots
music gauntlet, creating sounds that are familiar yet stunningly original. This
is music that will challenge a whole generation of artists to invest a new vitality
into old forms." - Bill Stunt, CBC Radio.
Harry Manx was born on the Isle of Man, immigrated to Canada as a child, returned to Europe in the late seventies to spend many years working festivals as a blues lap-slide guitarist/songwriter. He then moved moved to Japan where he lived and performed for ten years.
In 1990, while Harry was in Japan, he came across a recording of the Indian slide guitarist VM Bhatt. It wasn't long before he contacted Bhatt and made arrangements to join him in India. Manx became a student of Bhatt's and remained with him for five years. They traveled together in India and performed before large audiences.
In spring of 2000, Harry moved back to Canada and set up residence in Saltspring Island, British Columbia. During the summer he recorded his first Canadian CD at the Barn Studios. This debut recording features fourteen tracks of Harry doing his one-man-band sound on the lap slide guitar, the Mohan Veena, the blues harp and vocals.
Harry's music has been called an 'essential link' between the music of East and the West. His songs are short stories that use the essence of the blues and the depth of Indian ragas to draw you in.
Dog My Cat, Harry's first release from the summer of 2001, won the Canadian Independent Music Awards Best Blues Album of the Year award.
"Jubilee is an incredible roots disc" - Mike Bell, Calgary Sun [January 2003]
