A BIOGRAPHY: Anna Lyman and her music...
PICANTE!
Anna Acevedo Lyman, (B.Mus.,Jazz,), has a Tenor-Alto-Soprano voice, and is blessed with a 4 1/2 Octave range,
She was born to a Latin American Father and a Scotch/Irish/English-American Mother in the
Detroit area. Her music is a tasty Fusion of Latin originals, Jazz originals, Standards, Motown Soul, and
is strongly influenced by Mexican, Caribbean, and Brazilian music.
In her late teens, she relocated to British Columbia where she
completed her high school and university education.
Anna writes her music in Spanish and English. Coming from a Latin-American family, the Spanish versions of her songs are important to her.
In earlier years, Anna competed in music festivals in voice taking away awards and appearing in Honours performances.
Her very first
professional gig was at Expo 86 when she started a vocal group which successfully auditioned and performed at
that venue.
Anna's music has been heard on CBC's "Hot Air" beginning in 2002 when she released her debut CD "It's Lush", a critically acclaimed collection of originals and standards.
She recorded this CD with Juno award winning Producer Rick Kilburn in Burnaby, and the renowned master jazz Drummer, Keith Copeland, who said,
"She is one of the best singers I have ever recorded with in my entire 40+ career! She has
what musicians refer to as "the real magic"! She is as close to a perfect singer and song
stylist as anyone I have ever heard..." (Keith Copeland, www.keithcopeland.com).
In Feb. 2005 Anna was featured on CBC "North by Northwest" interviewed by Sheryl McKay.
Anna's music education is a mixture of formal and non-formal training, beginning with her Father's
LatinAmerican Caribbean music, the Motown hits she grew up with, and exposure to her
Mother's eclectic affection for Brandenberg Concertos and Sergio Mendes, Brasil 66, all
culminating in A BACHELOR OF MUSIC in Jazz studies at Vancouver Island University, formerly, Malaspina University College.
Anna's Caribbean & Mexican background is making it's way into her recent Latin
compositions. Anna writes in several genres, but mainly Soul Jazz, Swing, and a type of Bluesy Latin she is developing.
Anna
taught a guitar accompaniment class at Okanagan University College for 6 years from 1988 - 1993.
Penticton, BC. In 1996 Anna moved to the BC Gulf Islands, and currently Nanaimo, where she gives singing lessons.
Anna's inspired jazz and latin has been heard at various locations such as Rossinis in Gastown, Vancouver with pianist Doug Louie,
or at the Fairview Pub Thurs. nights with John Nolan. Also, Rossinis in Kitsilano. She has also appeared at The Cellar Jazz club with Melody Diachun and Lorraine Foster.
She was the Headliner at Tania's on Front St. in Nanaimo from July of 2004 to the end of Dec. 2006, and at Ilios Mediterranean Restaurant in Nanaimo, from Spring 2007 to Spring 2008.
